The introduction of Italian renaissance in the
Northern Schools,
Around 1500 Dürer and the German school were
very important and influential in the whole of
Europe.
He is represented with three woodcuts made
available on my site.
However when looking for the cradle of the art that flourished in Antwerp in the 16th and 17th century, we have to look more to the south. Dutch and Flemish artists went to Italy and absorbed Italian renaissance from the great masters themselves. Some artists featured this month on my website are exemplary :
- Frans Floris (1519-1570) arrived in Rome in 1541 when Michelangelo finished his paintings in the Sistine chapel and stayed there several years to return as the Flemish Raphael.
- Cornelis Cort (1533-1578) went to Venice where he was a pupil of Titian. Later he founded a studio for engraving in Rome who formed Carracci and others.
- Hieronymus Cock (1510-1570) in Antwerp who was the source for Renaissance graphics in Antwerp. It will not surprise that both artist were related to his publishing house.
New work by Albrecht Dürer, Frans Floris
and Cornelis Cort is featured on the site this
month.
Enjoy the selection, all prints with large
images and prices are available on the
